Medical Needs

We go on vacation to have a good time, enjoy ourselves and to not have a care in the world. Sometimes our plans are thwarted by unforeseen events such as a toothache, sickness, injury or serious medical development. In order to help you go from what can I do, to which option should I choose, we have done some searching for you. If you read our testimony page you will also see where we and our guest found ourselves face to face with a life saving situation that thankfully came out with a happy ending. The honest reality is we had a very good chance for just the opposite to occur and actually tempted fate by deciding to become a first responder and an ambulance to the hospital, a mistake I would not make again.

Because of our aging population we have a large number of medical locations for emergency and specialized treatments. Whether you have the flu, tooth ache, food poisoning, a broken bone. stroke, heart attack or other critical medical event, Sarasota should be very capable in providing your medical needs and remedies. Sarasota has very hospitals and Sarasota Memorial Hospital has received awards for their recent operational levels and patient care achievements. You might also consider Sarasota as an ideal location to come to receive medical treatment of a specialized or elected nature. Not only will you find a good choice of service providers and medical specialists to choose from, but staying in the area during recovery is a pleasant experience.

Listed below are our recommendations of various medical services and practices that you might find useful while staying in the Sarasota area. These are only our recommendations and we in no way are suggesting anything more than a start in your search for medical assistance. If we have had personal experience with any of these practitioners, services or medical facilities we have stated this within the information for that service or facility. If we have other reasons for listing them here, we will also mention the source of that information. If we are listing it just because we know it or they are here, we will also state that within the information so you can make your own decisions. I have, in the past, done much of my own diagnosis over the Internet and then sourced my medical help from the Internet based on what I found in close proximity to wear I live. This may not always be the greatest way to handle medical items, but it seems to have worked for me.

Emergency Medical Response

This is an easy answer. CALL 911, again CALL 911. I speak from authority on this one. This is just what I failed to do. The fire response is just down the block before the light at Midnight Pass and Beach Road. They will be here quickly and man the fire station with another emergency vehicle when the regular vehicle is busy. Technicians are taking your vitals in radioing information directly to the triage center at the hospital who will be ready and waiting for your arrival. Additionally they are instructing the technician on what procedures to use and drugs to administer until your arrival. One more time CALL 911.

This is the hospital that I drove to with our friend and rental guest, Kevin Smith, while he was suffering a heart attack. Happily Kevin survived the ride, but more importantly Kevin will readily tell anyone that this hospital saved his life after he flat lined three times in a couple hour period. With the placement of a stent and their watchful medical care, Kevin was released from the hospital in about one week and was able to travel home to Scotland a little over a week later.

Paul H Jaworski DDS PA
3990 Clark Rd.
Sarasota, Florida 34233

The last thing any of us need while on vacation is a dental problem. A toothache, broken tooth or other dental emergency can bring a quick damper to a restful holiday. Our recommendation is our dentist Ben Moricz who is an associate of dentist Paul Jawarski. Their dental office is located close by at 3990 Clark Rd. (Stickney Point on the Key) at the corner of Sawyer. In addition to an immediate dental need, Nann and I can speak to the quality of dentistry that you will receive from this office for regular dental services and any cosmetic dentistry that you may want to arrange while spending time on Siesta Key. Their office takes Visa and Master Charge and your dental records can be transferred to this office for additional work. We have referred others to their dental office and all have found them to be very professional and now are their personal dentists.

Island Chiropratic
3900 Clark R. Suite C1
Sarasota, FL 34233
Dr Tammy Kiefer of Island Chiropractic was formerlly located on Siesta Key and is now located on 3900 Clark Rd. Suite C1 in the shopping center where our dentist recommendation is located. The phone number is 941-924-3885. Both Nann and I have used Tammy for her manipulative services and we are both satisfied with the outcome. We have referred others to Tammy also and they too were satisfied with her services. Don't walk around Siesta Key or Sarasota with a back ache or stiff neck when relief is waiting for you.

Pelican Plaza Optical
7650 S. Tamiami Trail Suite 10
Sarasota, FL 34231

John Grondahl is a great find for your glasses and optical needs. John carries the best in eyeglass frames at very reasonable prices and quick service is delivered on his lenses. The frame inventory that is maintained in this shop is nothing less than awesome. John makes it a point to not inventory frames that he feels will not properly service his customers. I have been to a number of chain eyeglass shops in the past and I always walked away feeling they had lots of frames, but nothing to choose. This is not true at Pelican Optical.
The attention that is paid to your eyeglass needs is enhanced by John's candid comments on what the glasses do for your face and perhaps what he feels might service you better. If you choose frames that don't work well with your prescription, John is going to explain the problem to you and if necessary, to nicely let you know why he will not put your prescription in the frames you have chosen. John will give you practical suggestions for your optical needs and make sure that the delivered product fits and services you well. As if everything mentioned above was not enough, John is going to save you money on your eye glass needs. This newly located office is located next to Waterfront Restaurant

5644 Marquesas Circle
Sarasota, FL 34233

Roger A Weber, M.D., P.A. will test your eyes and take care of eye problems that may go beyond what you could receive in services from an optometrist. Roger comes highly recommended from John Grondahl of Pelican Plaza Optical and I recently had my eyes examanined by Dr. Weber and I can see again. My theory on eye exams is the same as my early practice of finally giving into glasses when I ran out of arm. This is also a good place to go when you have an eye issue that may need help beyond what you can receive from an optometrist. Dr. Weber is Chief of Ophthalmology at Sarasota Memorial Hospital.

Intercoastal Medical Group
3333 Cattlemen Road Suite 210
Sarasota, FL 34232
(941) 371-3337
My doctor is Adam Getzels who graduated in 2002 from medical school. Adam is very conscientious doctor who does an excellant job of reviewing with you in detail what information you need to know about your health and what steps he is going to take, as well as what his expectations are of what you have to do. In my case it's my regular nemesis, lose weight and exercise more. I recently needed to see my doctor because of a potential blood clot and Adam what out of town. His staff arranged an appointment for me in two hours on Good Friday. This is the service from a medical professional organization that sends very positive feeling on how seriously they take your health needs. I highly recommend Adam Getzels to anyone in need of an internist. The staff at Intercoastal Medical Group is also very professional and efficient.

Have you ever met someone who just does not look their age? Maybe they even seem to be much more physically adept than others of this age. We all know that we have to take care of ourselves, but how many really know what this means from a healthy standpoint. Oh sure, we should not smoke, need to drop those extra pounds and maintain a daily exercise routine. Getting over the guilt that is reaking from the previous sentence, what else should we be doing? Should we take vitamins, supplements or drink special teas? A real good start for help in this area is Dr. Stephen Burkes an MD internist who now specializes in how to fine tune our bodies as we age. Dr. Burkes starts to know you by looking at your lab work from a blood test that he has you do before he first meets with. He will tell you that your body is like a manufacturing plant and the only way to understand how it is performing is to talk with you and to analyze your blood test results. From there Dr. Burkes will recommend vitamins, hormones and other supplements to bring your manufacturing plant in to a well running machine that should serve you well for a long and healthy time. Dr. Burkes leaves the regimen up to you, sells you no pills or other items and just monitors you on semi-annual or annual basis once your needs are established. If you're looking for the fountain of youth, keep looking. If you want to feel good, look good and have lots of energy, stop looking, I think you found what you have been looking for.

Prescriptions and Drugs

Through out Sarasota you will find many large drug stores that take up the entire corner of an intersection. In this land of an aging population they are ubiquitous and most of them will be Walgreen's or CVS, the two major player's in this area. Those on US 41, Tamiami Trail, that lead to either of the two bridges on Siesta Key are also open 24 hours with prescription service late into the evening. Not only can you purchase your prescriptions, but almost anything else you might need to survive and it is not unusual to find a beer, wine and liquor store next door that is owned by the drug store. Your cosmetics, patent medicine, first aid kits, toothpaste, aspirin or what ever else you think you need on a 24 hour basis is available at these large stores. Sometimes you might find yourself in the need for a very specialized pharmacy and we have those also. On Siesta Drive just east of US 41 you will find Sarasota Specialty Pharmacy where the pharmacist specializes in compounding exactly what your doctor ordered. Their compounding pharmacists work with physicians, veterinarians, dentists and other health care practitioners to prepare patient specific medications.
